Energy Storage and Curtailment Info

2010 Xcel Energy Presentation that contains graphs on wind resources and on load duration curves (load duration curves show the percentage of the hours in a year you need certain levels of generation.)

Curtailment information is also found in the presentation. Curtailment means not taking wind electricity onto the grid when it was generating (telling wind turbines “don’t generate now”) because coal baseload power plants can NOT go below a certain level of generation.¬† It is very difficult to “ramp-up or down” a coal plant: it must burn coal at a constant level throughout the year, even if the levels of energy being produced are more than is needed on the grid.
